The Metro of Madrid, the most accessible




The Madrid is a world reference in accessibility for people with mobility problems. This follows from the results that place Metro de Madrid at the top ranking for number of escalators and elevators installed on your network.


Furthermore, the Committee of Organizations of Disabled Representatives of the Community of Madrid (CERMI) gave the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid Prodis 2009 X Prize Anniversary in the category of entities, reports elEconomista.es.


In total, 1.624 stretches of escalators, well above the second in this ranking, the Moscow metro, which account with 598 tranches or Paris, with 504. Furthermore, it is undertaking a renovation project in which up to 2011 stairs 281 will change with more secure and sustainable.


Metro de Madrid is also number one in elevators installed, with 488 in the whole network, it occupies second place New York with 196 and is followed by London, with 150 lifts. This first post will be consolidated with the ten new lifts from Plaza de Castilla, the five Sainz de Baranda, both of Argüelles and as many Pacific.


Additionally, as part of the Universal Access Plan, which began in 2005, and who do Metro de Madrid and Mintra, proceed to install up to 30,000 linear feet of pavement podotáctil (the yellow button) to signal the edges of platforms to blind.


This will be completed to mark the 126 network stations that have not had this distinctive pavement, with an investment of over EUR 2,600,000. Installation is expected to end in the first quarter of this year.


Currently, the Madrid Metro network has 130 stations with elements of mobility aids for people with disabilities and up to 144 stations are equipped with elevators.
